According to AT&T we’re going run out of internet by 2010, an apocalyptic scenario parodied in this week’s South Park.
During a speech in London this week, AT&T Vice President for Legislative Affairs Jim Cicconi announced that the demands of downloaders and video viewers will eat up every inch of AT&T’s capacity within three years.
“In three years’ time, 20 typical households will generate more traffic than the entire Internet today.”
Think about that. In three years, Cicconi believes 20 homes will be the equal of the entire global internet, a system that currently has 1.3 billion users. Is this man right in the head?
Of course AT&T’s doomsday predictions are driven by their bottom line. The company has been pushing to cap their customer’s bandwidth usage, and if they can convince enough gullible people that the internet will soon be maxed out, they may land a few more supporters in their camp.
Do they expect us to be sympathetic? They charge a high price for the service. If demands of consumer change, then quit whining and make the necessary investments to the infrastructure so AT&T can meet those demands. Instead, they think they can take out their frustration on their customers for using the service they pay for.

Ha! I seriously loved this episode of “The Daily Show.” And I love your little blurb leading into the video.

This is probably my favorite post of yours. For one thing, I had absolutely no idea that there was ever any possibility that we might “run out of Internet.” I think it’s pretty incredible that AT&T is making such grandiose hopeless predictions, and I totally agree with your comment that AT&T needs to just figure out how to meet the demand instead of simply griping about an impending doomsday.
Oh, and the South Park clip was absolutely hysterical.

Hey Adam,
Great site! I like how you use a wide-range of things — pictures, video, links — to add to your blog entries. I also like how you add a bit of personality and voice in the entries — “Running out of internet” and your latest blog are good examples od that.
I think you balance out giving information that big Internet buffs would really be interested in, and what people with little interest (or maybe not as much knowledge) need to know. While I may not really understand all the details, I don’t feel alienated.
I think yout “About” could be more detailed. Not sure if I got a good enough feel for what the mission of this blog is (and didn’t see the entry either).

Adam -
Great site, great blog. I think you do an excellent job of using video posts and photos to complement your posts. I also really like the layout and appearance of the site, and I definitely enjoy your writing style and commentary.
I think this is a really interesting and relevant topic that you’ve chosen, and I think that you bring up a lot of good articles and related questions. My only suggestion might be that you explain some of the more technical terms that you use in some of your posts. As a person who is somewhat comfortable with computers, I generally understood most of the technical references in your posts, but I there were just a few things here and there that made me think, “Huh. I’m not even really sure what that is.” For example, I’m not really sure what P2P applications are. On the other hand, I would imagine that most people reading your blog would be reading it because they are Internet and tech junkies, so you probably wouldn’t want to bore them with explanations of things that are readily obvious to people in the know. So, ultimately, it’s your call on that one.
But, overall, I think you are doing a fabulous job!
