Overview
Though more and more of our lives are spent in the digital world, we rarely stop to question the rules that govern this digital space. For the last 10 weeks, A Series of Tubes has sought to shed light on the ways in which major internet service providers seek to reshape the online environment. Taking the stance that digital freedom is under assault, the site has offered an opinionated stance in an attempt to get people to care about the issue. But do they care?
Well about 8-10 people per day care, and most of those are friends and family members. So how do I increase my readership.
The blog will expand beyond the narrow field of net neutrality to cover a wider range of legal issues in the digital age. The topic was overly narrow which turns off a large portion of the community who don’t know or don’t care about net neutrality.
Community
The audience for the site tends to be concentrated in areas I have lived or currently live in, which tells you that friends and family are the main readership of the site.
The site averages about 8 to 10 hits a day. It can go as high as 15 or 20 on days that I actually post (i.e. Sunday or Monday).
The readership is likely to be a more tech-oriented crowd or a crowd interested in emerging legal issues. People who are interested in news sources like Wired and CNet are potential readers of this blog.
The Plan
In order to better engage the community, I might consider adding a calendar of events highlighting net neutrality protests or community workshops and other events going on that they can participate in.
Also, I might add a section listing petitions and pending legislation on the topic so they can easily keep track of this complicated subject.
Posting on Wired and CNet blogs would also be a way to increase readership in my target demographic.
People seemed to respond to both the naked lady and the South Park clip, so I will try to find ways to add more nudity- and humor-based content to the site.
Additionally, more interviews with some of the big names in the field, like Lawrence Lessig or Timothy Wu could provide valuable insight while also tapping into the fan base these figures have attracted.
